Jamel Stephens, the visionary behind Afropop, launched Oklahoma's only Black-owned soda brand in December 2023. Growing up in rural Oklahoma, Stephens developed a deep appreciation for artistry and cultural identity, which later inspired Afropop's creation. Drawing from the legacy of pioneers like Percy and Hattie James, founders of Oklahoma's first Black-owned soda company in 1918, Stephens aims to celebrate Black culture authentically and powerfully. Collaborating with local artists, he ensures each can serves as a canvas for storytelling, embodying the spirit of Afrofuturism—a fusion of cultural heritage and visionary innovation. Beyond crafting unique flavors, Stephens envisions Afropop as a platform to empower and uplift Black creatives, fostering a movement that intertwines craft, creativity, and culture.
