Black History Month Always Brings Me the Same Question
Share
"So, what are you doing for Black History Month?"
I get this question every year. From brands. From followers. From people who genuinely mean well and are trying to figure out how to show up.
And honestly? My answer is pretty much the same every time.
I'm doing the same work I've been doing all year long.
Here's the thing—I didn't build UrFriendCharles because February exists. I built it to highlight Black-owned brands, founders, and the stories behind them every single month. January, April, September, doesn't matter. This work doesn't start when Black History Month shows up on the calendar, and it definitely doesn't end when March 1st rolls around.
Black history isn't seasonal. And neither is the excellence, creativity, and straight-up brilliance behind the brands I work with.
But look, I'm not going to sit here and act like February doesn't matter. Because it does.
Here's what February brings: attention.
More people are looking. More people are listening. More people are actually open to discovering founders and businesses they might not encounter otherwise. And pretending that moment doesn't exist, or that it's not valuable? That would be silly. Especially when visibility can directly change someone's trajectory.
So yeah, I show up louder during Black History Month.
Not because my mission changes. But because the spotlight gets brighter. And when the spotlight is brighter, more doors can open.
For founders, visibility isn't just some feel-good thing. It's real. It affects distribution conversations, retail placements, partnerships, and long-term growth. Awareness turns into introductions. Introductions turn into opportunities. Opportunities turn into legacy.
That's why this month matters—not as a box to check off, but as a multiplier for what's already happening.
My hope? That Black History Month becomes an entry point, not a finish line. A place where people start discovering these brands, and then keep supporting them in March, June, October, and beyond. That the curiosity doesn't stop. That the intentional buying doesn't stop.
Because here's the truth: Black history is being made every single day. The support should be too.
This month, I'll keep doing what I've always done—highlighting Black-owned brands and the people behind them—with the same intention, just a little more volume.
