Discover the untold history of Black mixology and its profound influence on American cocktail culture through 70 rediscovered, modernized, and celebrated recipes. From the 2025 James Beard Lifetime Achievement Award winner and author of the acclaimed Jubilee, this beautifully illustrated book spotlights the creativity, hospitality, and excellence of Black drinking culture across two centuries.
Journey from traditional classics like the Absinthe Frappe and Clover Leaf Cocktail to modern favorites including the Jerk-Spiced Bloody Mary and Gin and Juice 3.0. Tipton-Martin shines a light on underheralded early-twentieth-century icons like Tom Bullock (the first Black author to publish a cocktail manual), Julian Anderson, and Atholene Peyton, alongside modern superstars such as Snoop Dogg and T-Pain.
Drawing on her personal collection of over 300 African American cookbooks, rare texts, and extensive research dating back to 1827, Tipton-Martin reveals how these drinks evolved and shares the compelling stories of how Black mixology came to be—a culmination of generations of practice, skill, intelligence, and taste. Each recipe includes an informative headnote that places the beverage in its cultural and historical context, making this essential reading for cocktail enthusiasts and history lovers alike.
