Meet the Founders: Donta and William Henson
Los Hermanos 1978 was founded in 2020 by brothers Donta and William Henson, who were born in Pasadena, Maryland. This Black-owned and veteran-owned tequila brand emerged from an unlikely beginning during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the brothers transformed their shared love of tequila into an award-winning spirits company that's now distributed across multiple states.
Donta Henson, CEO and Co-Founder, is an accomplished United States Navy Veteran and acquisitions professional with expertise in financial and project management. Donta's commitment to service led him to spend nearly a decade developing banking, bookkeeping, financial reporting, and auditing skills while on Active Duty. Since leaving the U.S. Navy, Donta has leveraged his finance experience into managing multi-million-dollar acquisitions and contracts for the federal government. Donta works for Medicare while also leading Los Hermanos Tequila's growth in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions. The name 1978 marks the year that Donta was born, making this brand a deeply personal tribute.
William Henson, Co-Founder, works for Baltimore City and is the creative force with an incredible palate, deep knowledge of tequila, and a talent for brand storytelling. During the pandemic, William would visit Donta and his wife at home, and each time they would try a different brand of tequila. William ultimately decided that Casamigos was the best, and he encouraged the people in his life to make it their go-to brand. His passion and expertise became so well-known that people would go out and take pictures of tequila and send them back to him for recommendations —he had become an informal tequila spokesman among friends and family.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Los Hermanos 1978 Blanco unique?
Los Hermanos 1978 Blanco is a Black-owned and veteran-owned tequila made from 100% Blue Weber agave hand-selected from both highland and lowland regions of Jalisco, Mexico. It's distilled twice for exceptional smoothness and clarity, then fermented using traditional methods with natural airborne yeasts in open-air wooden vats. The result is an ultra-clean, aromatic tequila with bright citrus notes. It won Double Gold at the 2024 SIP Awards—the highest honor reserved for top-percentile spirits—along with Gold at the 2023 Bartender Spirits Awards and Silver at multiple other competitions. How should I drink Los Hermanos 1978 Blanco?
This exceptionally smooth blanco is perfect for sipping neat or on the rocks to fully appreciate its bright citrus and fresh agave character. It's also ideal for premium cocktails—try it in a classic Margarita, Paloma, Ranch Water, or the brand's signature cocktails like the Guava Lime Refresher or Basil Citrus Spritz. The clean, double-distilled profile makes it incredibly versatile for mixology while remaining smooth enough to enjoy straight. What's the difference between Blanco and Reposado tequila?
Blanco (also called Silver) tequila is unaged and bottled immediately after distillation, preserving the pure, vibrant agave flavor with bright citrus notes. Reposado means "rested" and is aged 2-12 months in oak barrels, giving it a golden color and adding oak, caramel, and vanilla notes. Los Hermanos 1978 Blanco showcases bright citrus freshness, while the Reposado (aged 8 months) has rich caramel and vanilla notes from bourbon barrel aging. Both are smooth, but offer different flavor experiences. What awards has Los Hermanos 1978 Blanco won?
Los Hermanos 1978 Blanco has earned impressive recognition: Double Gold Medal at the 2024 SIP Awards (the only spirits competition judged by consumers, placing it in the top percentile of its category), Gold Medal at the 2023 Bartender Spirits Awards, Silver Medal at the 2024 USA Spirits Ratings, and Silver Medal at the 2022 Bartender Spirits Awards. These awards validate its exceptional quality and distinctive character. Is Los Hermanos 1978 Blanco good for cocktails or sipping?
Both! The double distillation creates an exceptionally clean and smooth finish that's perfect for sipping neat, but the bright citrus profile also makes it ideal for cocktails. Many tequila enthusiasts prefer blancos for margaritas and fresh cocktails because the pure agave character shines through, while the smoothness of Los Hermanos 1978 makes it approachable enough to enjoy straight. -
